Chinese (oriental) and Western (occidental) astrological systems have existed for centuries distanced from each other. This distance results from various factors such as language, time measurement, and philosophical differences. The language differences are quite obvious. Divisions
Western astrology divides each year into twelve months based upon the rotation of the moon around the earth. Each year this yearly rotational cycle starts over. Each month has a celestial sign name: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagitarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces. Each of the twelve oriental years has animal sign name: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Cat, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig. Your birthdate will place you under the influence of both systems. You will have a Western month sign and a Chinese year sign. Just when you thought you couldn't get something for nothing- you got an extra sign. By combining the twelve Western and Chinese signs, we now have 144 astrology signs e. g. Leo/Cat, Virgo/Dragon etc.



Qualities
Western astrology has three qualities Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable which help define a person's characteristics along with the Ruling Elements, Ruling Planets etc. In Chinese Astrology the yin and yang can be considered qualities; however, they constitute the predominant forces governing everything. You've heard the saying that "it's either black or white", well in the Chinese system it's either yin or yang. This includes material objects like tables, shoes, trees etc. Yin is associated with the sun and its goal is darkness while yang is associated with the earth and its goal is light.
