Dreams
Dreams, nightmares, and night terrors- each of us has experienced one or more of these. Do they hold hidden messages? What secrets are they keeping from us? Do we dare ask? Dreams have been studied for thousands of years. There is mention in the Bible that Jacob dreamed of a ladder being placed upon his breast and reaching up to the sky. This was the prediction of the success of his people. Caesar's wife, Calpurnia, dreamt that her husband Julius would be murdered and so on. There is little doubt that dreams can be predictive at times. These are sometimes called intuitive dreams.

Intuitive Dreams
It is believed that this type of dreaming is similar to being in a hypnotic state. The dream's content is symbolic and the meaning rarely straightforward. Jung, Freud and others have spent lifetimes unmasking the symbolic content of dreams. While Freud looked to a person's past and the experiential to explain dreams, Jung looked at primitive or archetypal symbolism. Jung saw the predictive nature of dreams and also used archetypes with the Tarot.

Preoccupational Dreams
On the other hand, many dreams fall into the category of preoccupations. The content of these dreams is reflective of real life issues and concerns. These concerns can be addressed in our dreams. Dreaming can be a way to role play different ways to handle problems that confront us. Dreams may signal physical problems. Dreams of being very thirsty are sometimes associated with high fevers in people. Psychological, physiological, and environmental factors all play a role in dreaming.

Recording Dreams
cover Enough cannot be said about keeping good records of your dreams. Remember the saying that "Chance favors the prepared mind". Keep a diary of your dreams. Take it with you on trips and make sure it's on the nightstand when you're ready for bed. Make sure you date your entries and focus on key elements if other details escape you. People, objects, colors etc. in your dreams represent important information. If your dream is a recurrent one then track it. You'll find your dream diary invaluable as an aid to remembering details about your dreams you may have forgotten otherwise. You may then work with someone to interpret the dream or do it solo. Whichever route you take be sure to examine the symbolism in your dream's keywords. A good dream dictionary is the place to start e.g. The Dream Book: Symbols for Self-Understanding

Dream Analysis
Write down the descriptions from the dream dictionary for each of your keywords. Take a look at them and select those keywords that seem to be meaningful. There will always be a few words that do not seem to belong to the dream's message. Save these for later as when the dream's meaning unfolds they may come back into play. Look at your current situation e.g. health, career, romance, finances etc. and see how they might fit into the dream or vice-versa. These areas of your life usually fit in nicely in preoccupational dreams. As you make connections the dream's message will become clearer. If you can't seem to make a connection with your current situation then the dream may be predictive.

In predictive dreams look at each keyword's symbolic meaning and determine which area of your life it applies. For example if most of your keywords reflect finance then look at their overall message e.g. you dream you are a shepherd leading a flock of sheep into town and you give away money once you get there. This dream foretells of success and prosperity coming your way. The keywords sheep and money define this dream. Remember that the first step in dream analysis is to record the dream. This way it will be fresh and you'll have all the details. Dream interpretations have unlocked the doors for many people and set them on a path toward personal freedom and happiness.
