Online Searches with Genealogy Detective
Usage Examples: There are
people online who have census indexes or access to censuses who will be
happy to do a lookup for you.
Open GENEALOGY DETECTIVE 2000 and click on Link Database on the
top tabs, and scroll across the bottom tabs until you can click
on Census. The links will take you to a variety of
census-related sites. Some of them have links to
census records which are posted online. The U.S. Federal censuses are the best records for anyone just
getting started in their genealogy research.
Several tombstone inscription
projects are in progress. Thanks to volunteers, cemetery records are being
transcribed and placed on the Internet. Are you making use of these
searchable databases?
Open GENEALOGY DETECTIVE 2000 and click on Link Database on the
top tabs, then Cemetery Listings on the bottom tab. If you click
on Cemetery Listings on the Internet, you'll be taken directly to
a database of over one million records from more than 2,400
cemeteries world-wide. This database is free. From there, you can
access the Tombstone Project of the USGenWeb.

Time Saving Tip
This tip was shared with me recently. Remember to use alternative spellings when searching surnames. Most records contain quite a few errors and a one letter
difference in spelling could stall a search. For example, Jones could be spelled as Junes, Juns, Jons or
Hall could look like Hull, Hul, or Hal in the records. Thanks for this advice goes to my brother James A. Epperson PhD., mathematics
professor at Texas Tech University. Besides being an honored mathematician, James is a master genealogist.
