SOME HISTORY
The historical records show Tarot decks appearing early in the fourteenth century. The name probably derives from the Italian word tarocchi which means "triumphs" or "trumps". There are 78 cards in the deck divided into two main groups. There are 22 Major Arcana (or trumps) numbered I to XXI plus an unnumbered card- The Fool. The other group is the Minor Arcana which consists of 56 cards which are divided into four suits-swords, wands, cups, coins/pentacles. Forty of these cards are called the Pip cards (ace through ten of each suit). 16 make up the court cards King, Queen, Page, and Knight. Each card has a special symbolic meaning attached to it.

SOME THEORY
Jung a favorite student of Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) advanced a theory of archetypes (collective unconscious symbols). In a nutshell, humankind shares common themes such as the mother archetype. This forms a sort of image/pattern in our unconscious mind. Some of these archetypes may be called upon while others may not. Jung held that these archetypes can shape a conscious perception or thought. For example, as the tendency to to feel empathy and and the need to help deprived children stems from the "mother" archetype. Other examples of archetypes are the Hero, Magician, Demon etc. It is these archetypes which can be symbolized through the images in the Tarot.
